DANVILLE — As part of the Walldogs activities Saturday, Raymond Bial will sign copies of his new book, “Rescuing Rover: Saving America’s Dogs,” from 9-11 a.m. at the Fischer Theatre.
The book, published through Houghton Mifflin, is a photo-documentary about humane societies and shelters. The book includes stories about the four dogs and two cats that live with Bial and his wife, Linda, in Urbana.
A portion of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to local rescue groups.
Bial is a Danville native and a 1967 graduate of Schlarman High School. Bial, who’s also a photographer, has produced more than 100 books, many of them for children, but they also appeal to adults.
His new 80-page hardcover book is aimed at ages 9-12.
“Rescuing Rover” begins with a story about a puppy found in a pet carrier in a Dumpster in Champaign — with her mouth taped shut. Nobody knows how long the puppy had been in the hot Dumpster without water and food. Fortunately, someone found her and the little terrier amazingly survived.
She later became one of the fortunate dogs adopted by the Bial family. However, millions of dogs are born in the United States each year without a place to live.
Bial shares the sobering facts about the 6 million to 8 million unwanted dogs and cats taken in by shelters every year, with half of them euthanized. Bial takes readers into the heart of the dog overpopulation problem, covering puppy mills, pet stores, and backyard breeders.
Bial said many of the photographs were taken at the Champaign County Humane Society, and some at the ASPCA shelter in New York City.
“The ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States also graciously allowed us to use many photographs of dogs being rescued,” he said, including photographs of two of the stars (Annemarie Lucas and Adam Gankiewicz) on Animal Planet’s TV show, “Animal Precinct.”
In addition, Bial writes about the organizations working to help the animals and address the problems.
The content of the book is serious, and Bial frankly discusses the abuse many dogs experience, such as puppy mills, dog fighting, neglect or abandonment. However he offsets the serious side with inspiring examples of rescues, and also gives practical suggestions to help end animal cruelty.
He provides an overview of how to choose and adopt a dog from a shelter, with helpful steps for a successful adoption, including an extensive bibliography.
The book has been getting good reviews. A reviewer on the website “Booklist Online” wrote: “This is an outstanding book both for reports and for general interest and is an eye-opening call to arms for young readers.”
Bial also has written a series of spooky stories for young readers, including “Dripping Blood Cave and Other Ghostly Stories,” “The Fresh Grave and Other Ghostly Stories” and “The Ghost of Honeymoon Creek.” He’s also written a mystery novel for young people, “Shadow Island.”
Some of his historical books cover topics such as the Amish, Underground Railroad, Lincoln, Nauvoo, Ellis Island, and others. Plus, he did the photographs for the Marcia Adams cookbooks, Heirloom Recipes.

Many people working together can get a lot accomplished. In response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita five years ago, five animal organizations including IFAW, HSUS and ASPCA collaborated to form the Gulf Coast Spay/Neuter Recovery Project. To date, the project has spayed and neutered more than 70,000 dogs and cats in affected areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, significantly reducing the problem of homeless animals in the region. “What this collaboration has accomplished is unprecedented, in that it’s the first time that five national organizations have come together on a project at this level,” said Susan Sampey of the Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society.
